Bullying

Bullying is defined as any written, verbal or electronic expression or gestures, or any combination thereof, that are directed at a person or group of persons, or expression that is directed at a person or group of persons.

Any type of bullying at Mack Middle School is deemed both dangerous and in direct conflict with our philosophy of providing a quality education for ALL students and therefore must be reported quickly.

*Note: the classroom can be a bully-free zone when it is full of students that are engaged in meaningful and relevant learning. Bullying can be prevented by planning, preparation, and procedures. For more information on maintaining a classroom environment fit for learning, see the section, “Your Progressive Discipline Plan.”

Students may report a bully at http://ccsd.net/students/bully/.

Evacuation Drills and Lockdown Procedures

Safety

Teachers are to give students instruction in safety. Such instruction should be designed to cover all emergencies that might arise during the hours the students are under the care of the school.  This information should be included in detail, including the date the instruction was given, in your plan book or the location of such information clearly identified.  General precautions for all conditions and at all times should be stressed.

Each teacher is responsible for teaching the emergency drill instructions for all emergency situations and for the application and enforcement of the instructions.  Please be reminded to address these instructions in each class period.

First Aide/Safety Assistants

Any student illness, injury, or emergency that occurs within the school is to be reported to the Health Office.  In the event the health aide is not there, the office personnel will take over – or will call the nurse at another school site.

The school nurse/health aide will give emergency care and call the student’s parents.   It is the parents’ responsibility to provide whatever medical care is necessary.  Parent consent is necessary before a student can be sent home for illness or accident.

The School Nurse/Health Aide cannot:
  • Diagnose an illness or the extent of injury.

  • Dispense aspirin or any other medication, unless legal procedures are followed.  If it is necessary for students to take medication during school hours, they shall be instructed to contact the school nurse/health aide.

  • Remove or change dressing placed by parent or doctor

Students MUST HAVE A PASS to enter the Health Office (except in cases of accident or genuine emergency), the same as any other visit to an office.  A continuous record is kept of all students who report to the Health Office.  The record includes time entered, reason for visit, disposition, and time left.  The account is available for teacher verification of absence and /or tardy.

First aid procedures are set up by the School District and approved by the County Health Officer. A list of first aid procedures is available in the Health Office.  Teachers should familiarize themselves with these procedures.

Accidents to Students

All injuries to students are to be reported, in writing, by the teacher having supervisory jurisdiction over the pupil at the time of the injury.  Secure forms for this from the Health Office and complete them accurately and completely before leaving school the day of the accident or injury.

If a student is injured while under your jurisdiction, please use the following procedures:

  1. Render only the amount of first aid that is necessary to meet the immediate emergency.

  2. If the student can safely be transported, take him/her to the Health Office or have him/her escorted to the office by a responsible student or monitor.  Teachers are not to leave their student-occupied classes/classrooms unattended to escort a child to the office.

  3. If a student cannot be safely transported, call the building administrator to the scene of the accident.

  4. Complete an injury report in detail and present it to the Health Office.  Teachers are to complete the top portion that includes name, address of student, time, and date of accident, etc.  Faculty/staff are asked to tell what happened and to sign in the space indicated (teacher in charge).

  5. Do not send the student to the hospital and DO NOT CALL 911.  This will be done by the school nurse or principal after arrangements have been completed with the parent or guardian of the student.

Hall Monitors

Mack Middle School is fortunate to have several full time campus security personnel on site at all times for EXTREME security or discipline scenarios. It is not the job of campus security to maintain our classrooms fit for instruction on a daily basis, nor is campus security intended to replace a progressive behavior plan created by the instructor. For more information regarding progressive behavior plans, click here to go to Discipline.

You may reach a hall monitor by pressing the black call button close to your door or dialing 4200 (Dean’s Office).

Morning Duty

Every child that enters the building at 7:30 am is Mack Middle School’s responsibility until they exit the building at 2:11 pm. In an effort to provide a secure environment for our students, instructors are required to serve on a rotating basis as hall monitors from 7:30 to 7:50 am. A schedule of duty times and dates will be provided at the beginning of each semester. Each staff member is required to find a substitute if he or she cannot monitor his or her assigned post. Failure to serve your duty may result in disciplinary action.

For more information on responsibilities of instructional personnel, see the Instructional Responsibilities section of the handbook.

School Guests on Campus

All school guests must check in at the front office to obtain and wear a visitor’s pass. Parents may request to observe classes of their students.  They must give 24 hours’ notice to do so.

Teachers that wish to have a guest speaker should get his or her supervisor’s approval prior to making these plans.
